In issue #17 (some of which is reproduced in Ed the Happy Clown), we begin with a pygmy running madly through the sewer. Heâs caught by Christian and strangled to death. Christian is about to eat him when he notices Josie nearby him in the bushes, her face bloody, apparently feeding off the dead Chet. âOh boyâreal food!â Christian says. âDo you mind if I join you?â He breaks off one of Chetâs legs and digs into it, while Josie continues to bite Chetâs neck. Soon, she excuses herself and goes in search of Ed. When she doesnât find him (impossible she would, since Ed is now elsewhere), she turns into a bat and flies home. Meanwhile, Christian continues eating, but notices when one of Chetâs hands detaches itself from the dead manâs arm and scuttles off.
At home, Josieâs mother is busy having sex with a muscle-bound younger man, who, after Josie arrives, she tries to set up with her. Thereâs a nicely absurd tension between the kind of typical conversation a mother and a daughter might have about the guy the former is trying to set the later up with (âWhatâs the matter with him?â âNothing mum, heâs just not my type.â) and the fact that all three are naked, and that the mom has just been having sex with the man. Josie goes to bed, taping up her blind and falling asleep. In panel 10:5, Chetâs severed hand appears without explanation, loosens the taped down blind, and raises it while Josie sleeps on.
Jump to the next morning. Josieâs mother and the muscle-bound guy are having coffee together now and talking. âShe didnât seem too interested in me last night,â he suggests. âIt was just that she was so tired,â the mother responds, and encourages him to go into her bedroom and âwake her up with a kiss.â When he does, he finds her on fire, in the process of being burned by the sun. They drag her into the bathtub and soak her down, then carry her through the apartment building, planning to drive her to the hospital. But as soon as they get into the sun she catches fire. She scrambles screaming to a manhole cover and dives into the sewer. The mother sends the potential boyfriend down in after her (see Fig. 24), upon which the Ed portion of the issue ends.
